March 2010 Meeting: Kristen Wiley and Jim Harrison of the Kentucky Reptile Zoo Venom: What's the Problem?
Event Details and Additional Information
A synopsis of new information from recent venom conferences, covering snake bite, treatment, and antivenoms, as well as current research using venom.
Jim Harrison has been director of Kentucky Reptile Zoo since its inception in 1990. KRZ houses one of the largest collections of venomous snakes in the world, currently about 1200 animals. Jim has extensive experience with captive husbandry of a wide variety of venomous snakes. He has been extracting venom for 33 years. Jim has extensive experience with controlling and capturing dangerous reptiles in a variety of environments. Prior to starting KRZ, he worked as a police officer/paramedic and certified fitness instructor and masseuse. Kristen Wiley has been curator of Kentucky Reptile Zoo since 1999. She is currently finishing a MS in biology, where she did radio telemetry research on Crotalus horridus. Kristen has been the coordinator for importing foreign anti-venom for a consortium of zoos for the last six years. Kristen has experience maintaining confiscated animals and records.
