Lake Erie Water Snake Project: OSU?s Stone Lab: Weekend of Herping for Lake Erie Water Snakes

On Saturday June 6th, Kristin, the island snake lady and her friends will be offering a variety of family friendly ?snakey? activities on South Bass Island at our ?Snake Day at the Bay?. Join us in the field to learn how we catch and process LEWS from 9:30 ? 11:00. Come out and bring the kids to the newly established Lake Erie Islands Nature and Wildlife center for some snake crafts and local snake show-and-tell from 1:00-3:00pm. We will have a variety of great reptile pets on display at the Aquatic Resource Center (a.k.a. fish hatchery) all day, finishing up with a program on ?Keeping Snakes and other Herps as Pets? that afternoon from 4:00-5:00pm. Schedule of Events
9:30 - 11:00 am Come and Catch ?.and Release.
Join our snake crew in the field (weather permitting) and learn about our capture-mark-recapture methods and how they help us understand Lake Erie watersnake populations. Meet at your choice of the South Bass Island State Park Boat Ramp or the Scheef Nature Preserve (a.k.a. East Point). Both sites will be censused simultaneously.
1:00 - 3:00 pm Learn about the Locals
Come out to the Lake Erie Islands Nature and Wildlife Center to get to know your local snake neighbors and make some snake crafts to take home.
4:00 ? 5:00 pm Keeping Herps as Pets
Join members of the major herpetological societies in Ohio at the Aquatic Resource Center (a.k.a. hatchery) for an informative program on what species of reptiles make good pets, how you can get one and the kind of care involved.
